A different perspective on the role of the Landscape Architect – a view from Delhi India

Akshay Kaul is a landscape architect based in Delhi India with a masters degree in landscape architecture from the State University of New York. His view on the role of landscape architecture is informed by the dire ecological condition at a landscape level in India. His approach, from the perspective of a developing nation with extreme pressures on the environment due to a massive population of over one billion people, may be informative to the practice of landscape architecture in South Africa and Africa as a whole. From an article based on an interview with Akshay Kaul we include the following insightful extract. Read the full article “Learn the lay of the land“.

What is the difference between an architect and a landscape architect?
“An architect’s training is in the making of a building, while the landscape architect is trained to understand aspects of geology, soil, vegetation, drainage and hydrology, site and master planning, site services, and also building design. The architect is trained to design buildings, and the landscape architect should be telling the architect where to place the building on site, on the master plan, and design the open spaces”.
