A MARBURG Haven farmer, 80-year-old N.Y. Naidoo said he needs water tankers to maintain his vegetable garden which produces for Meals on Wheels, which feeds more than 500 people every day.
Naidoo’s grows vegetables on a plot of land on the Marburg Haven premises and says its very difficult to water the acres of land with a watering can.
“Its very difficult for me to water the vegetables everyday with a watering can. I have asked the Department of Agriculture to assist me with at least two tanks so I can rig up a sprinkler system.”
Nadioo said department officials came to see the land but failed to assist him. He also approached stakeholders for assistance, but that too failed.
Naidoo said he is currently planting vegetables that do not need a lot of water.
“I have planted beans which I am now harvesting and if I do get the tanks I will start planting beetroot, carrots, spinach, lettuce and tomatoes, which require a lot of water.”
He said all he is asking for is three 10 000 litre tanks that will supply his garden in order for him to provide food for the needy.
