Growing food inside apartments is a challenge, but within reach with Britta Riley and Rebecca Bray’s Window Farms.
Growing food inside apartments is a challenge, but within reach. Britta Riley and Rebecca Bray began to build and test the first Window Farm prototypes in February 2009, through a residency at Eyebeam in New York. Agricultural, architectural and other specialists were consulted, sensor data collected, and hydroponics research by NASA scientists and marijuana farmers reinterpreted. The working prototype is a drip system made from recycled water bottles and holds 25 plants including beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, arugula, basil, lettuce and kale. Wanting to start a craze, Riley and Bray have published directions to make your own window farm at www.windowfarms.org.
