As the November examinations come to an end and pupils breathe a sigh of relief, while the teachers complete the marking process, we look back to this year’s Witness Garden Show, where the theme was “Symphony of Spring”, which enabled everyone involved to get creative. Pupils were asked to design a garden that represented the topic of spring, incorporating an instrument to be displayed in the garden and which they could make out of recycled material.
This was an exciting experience for our pupils as we are an eco-school after all. Grade 8 pupils decided on a marimba made from cans and plastic bottles, and also painted and designed a waterfall that was incorporated into their garden.
A group of five pupils set up the display at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg and were given a range of flowers to choose from to incorporate into their garden to be arranged around their instrument in keeping with the theme of their design.
The task had to be completed within a five-hour time limit, with various schools also setting up their displays under the same rules.
Judging took place during a complimentary picnic provided by the organisers, and, once the results were tallied, we gathered to hear the final results.
Hermannsburg was awarded fourth place in its category and each pupil received a certificate as well as the opportunity of mingling with TV personalities who have their own garden shows. It was truly a memorable learning experience.
On the sporting front, the U10 cricket team played a home game against Wembley College last Wednesday, providing a nail-biting spectacle as the outcome hung on the last ball, with Hermannsburg needing one run to win. The match ended in a draw when the Wembley bowler bowled out the Hermannsburg batsman.
Both teams made 83 runs
