Public transport just got a whole lot prettier and greener with the announcement that Madrid in Spain is getting rooftop gardens on some of its buses and bus stops.

At the unveiling of the plans, its City Hall said that the plan is aimed at tackling pollution and reducing C02 emissions.

These innovative gardens have been grown by PhytoKinetic, and are the latest in a series of measures introduced by city’s administration to boost its environmental policies.

Each bus garden will be made of metallic metals and sustainable materials that can withstand movement, and they will also have a special irrigation system to avoid leakage.

It is hoped that the rooftop gardens will improve the environment by soaking up noise, heat and pollution, and they will be trialled with a pilot project on the number 27 and 34 bus routes.

The environmental measure is called “Muévete en verde” and it was selected as one of six innovative projects to improve the city from 800 entries.
