Muizenberg rolls out access mat to make beach wheelchair-friendly

This week, Cape Town’s famous surfing beach got a bit of a makeover.

The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department, in partnership with the Western Cape Health Department, rolled out its first universal access mat at Muizenberg beach to also cater to physically impaired beach-goers.

In celebration of International Wheelchair Day, which took place on 1 March 2020, this became the first beach in South Africa to launch such a ‘beach mat’.

Rolled out on the sand to create a pathway, which essentially guides wheelchairs and other walking-aid users, the mat leads people closer to the ocean, but not to its very edge for safety reasons.
