The community of ward 65 will be able to enjoy the amenities on offer at Beacon Park which was handed over to the Municipality after being upgraded. The revamp of the park was undertaken by cement company Afrisam, supported by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) at a cost of R1 million.
The upgrade included recreational elements including a swing and see-saw, an outdoor gym facility, tables and benches and fencing around the entire perimeter of the park. The completion of the park was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown. However, Afrisam remained committed to the partnership. Andre Potgieter, Regional Manager at Afrisam said: “This is a celebration of many heritages coming together with all partners helping one another to plough positive programmes back into our communities.
We are very proud to be a part of this initiative.” Before the upgrade, Beacon Park was a haven for criminals, drug addicts and prostitutes. Ward Councillor Samantha Windvogel said people did not feel safe in the park with robberies a common occurrence. “I am thankful that ward 65 was chosen to be the beneficiary of this upgrade,” she said. Moleboheng Sekhonyana, from DMRE said the responsibility to provide services and development to areas lies with local government, but the availability of funds is a challenge. “This is why we welcome the partnership that Afrisam has with eThekwini Municipality.
Holding hands as the public and private sectors, we can achieve much more.” Deputy Head of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit Sibusiso Mkhwanazi called on members of the community to help maintain the park. “This facility belongs to the residents of the area. I urge you to take care of it and protect it.” Mkhwanazi added that programmes in partnership with the City’s Sports and Recreation Department are in the pipeline and will benefit those residing in the area.
